Headlight Lens / Clear Plastic Restoration Guide

Wolfgang has developed a three-part system that cleans and clarifies plastic lens covers. By removing the cloudiness from the lens, more light is able to pass through the lens cover to better illuminate the road ahead. You can see the road and other drivers can see you.

The Wolfgang Lens Cleaning System is designed to be used with 4" pads and your electric drill. You may also use the included backing plate on your circular polisher. A dual action adapter is sold separately.(LC-46-230DA)

Getting StartedÂ…

You will need a drill or a polisher to use this system. The kit contains a backing plate that fits directly onto a rotary polisher. The included adapter enables the backing plate to be used on a cordless or electric drill. A dual action adapter is sold separately.

Step by Step:

We used the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaning Kit to restore the headlights on this 2002 Mercedes with significant yellowing and cloudiness. The only extra supplies we used were the 3M Performance Masking Tape and the drill. Everything else is supplied by the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaning Kit.

Preparation

Clean loose debris and dirt from the lenses. Tape off the paint around the lenses using green detailer tape. This tape is easier to remove than masking tape and has no adverse effects on the clear coat.

Step 1 - Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaner

Pour a circle of Wolfgang™ Plastik Lens Cleaner onto an orange Low Profile Pad. The cut of this pad will help break down the abrasives in the polish as it removes the haze. Press the pad to the lens cover. If you are using a cordless drill, polish at the highest speed. Use the lowest speed on an electric drill. If you are using an orbital polisher, set the speed between 1200 and 1500 RPM. Go over the lens several times in different directions until the polish starts to dry. Use a microfiber towel to buff away the residue. If the lens is still cloudy, repeat this step.

Step 2 - Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze

Switch the pad to a black pad. Pour a circle of Wolfgang™ Plastik Lens Glaze onto the pad. Press it to the lens cover and turn the machine on at the speeds listed above. Work in different directions until the glaze starts to dry. Buff off the residue with a microfiber towel.

Step 3 - Wolfgang Plastik Surface Sealant

As a final step, use Wolfgang™ Plastik Surface Sealant to seal and protect your lenses. Use it on plastic windows and motorcycle windshields, too.

As you can see from the image below, the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaning Kit restored the headlight lens cover to nearly new condition!

Motorcycles:

If you want to restore your motorcycle's plastic windshield, only follow steps 2 and 3. The Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaner is too aggressive for this comparatively soft plastic. Instead, use the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze to clean and restore the windshield, followed by Wolfgang Plastik Surface Sealant for lasting clarity. You can use the complete system on motorcycle headlights.

Convertible Top Windows:

Again, the cleaner has too much cut for soft clear vinyl convertible windows. Use the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze to gently remove scratches and cloudiness. Then apply Plastik Surface Sealant to protect the vinyl from future damage.

Clean Up:

Toss your used pads in a solution of Wolfgang Polishing Pad Rejuvenator and water. Dilute one scoop per 3-4 gallons of water. You can cut the solution in half if you've only got these two pads to clean. Let them soak for 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
